We are delighted to inform you that the 39th Colombo Scout Group obtained a General Class Amateur Radio License and registered S Thomas’ Preparatory School Kollupitiya, as an Amateur Radio Station. Our call sign 4S6STP was issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) on 19th September 2024.

The Amateur Radio Station also received its club station membership from The Radio Society of Sri Lanka.

Amateur radio provides an incredible opportunity for young people to learn about communication, technology, and community service. By getting involved, students and Scouts can understand the science behind how radios work, covering physics, electronics, and even geography as they connect with people from different parts of the world. This hands-on experience makes STEM subjects come to life, sparking interest in potential careers in technology and engineering.

The handlers of the Amateur Radio License will be the 39th Colombo Scout Troop together with licensed operators of the Radio Society of Sri Lanka.

The 39th Colombo Scout Troop Patrol Leader’s Council Chairman Master Thenu Senadheera handed over a commemorative plaque on behalf of 39th Colombo Scout Group to the patron of the Scout group, the Reverend Nihal Fernando, on 12th November 2024.

An appreciation plaque was also awarded on behalf of S. Thomas’ Preparatory School to The Radio Society of Sri Lanka. Mr. Victor Goonathileke 4S7VK received the appreciation plaque from Reverend Nihal Fernando.

Our station is currently in the process of getting equipped, and we do not have any radio equipment yet. We are open to all assistance that you may be able to give us in this endeavour, whether monetary or otherwise, and would deeply appreciate any support from the Prep Old Boys community. If you would like to assist us, or to find out more about how you can help, please reach out via email at prepscouts@gmail.com for guidance on donation procedures.

We are thankful for our Headmaster, the Reverend Nihal Fernando and our Group Scout Leader Miss Yvonne Charles for enabling us to achieve this milestone. Our grateful thanks also go out to the members of the Radio Society of Sri Lanka.
